Increasing Network Visibility - RCTS 2.0 - João Silva (FCCN)

This presentation showcases the advancements in network visibility achieved within the FCT|FCCN L2/L3 network over the past two years, following the RCTS100 project. This project not only upgraded the network to Nx100G connections but also introduced a complete technological shift in network management.

The goal is to illustrate how specific tools and features interact to provide enhanced visibility while offering better performance and scalability than previous solutions.

NOC Troubleshooting: Unified View, Automated Action - Mirna Ljubić Tustonjić (CARNET)

In modern Network Operation Centers (NOCs), the complexity of managing operational networks is amplified by the need to access data from numerous tools and systems. The latest SIG-NOC tools survey indicates that, on average, organizations use 11.5 different tools daily. This multi-tool environment can slow down the troubleshooting process, as network engineers are forced to navigate between several screens to find and fix problems.

To overcome this challenge, we have created a solution as part of the GN5-1 project’s Network Development work package (WP6), which automates the collection of data from various tools and date sources and presents it on a unified dashboard using Grafana. This method significantly accelerates troubleshooting, making it faster and more efficient.

Our presentation will focus on demonstrating this practical use case, outlining the data sources involved, and showing how we visualize this information to provide a comprehensive network overview on a single screen.

Deep insights through network visibility - use cases for NRENs - Aitor Mendaza Ormaza (BENOCS)

Network visibility is essential for a smooth-running network. NRENs benefit in different ways from gaining such insight into their network: they can save cost of transit and internet exchanges, can secure more direct and symmetrical paths for their traffic, resulting better quality of service for their users. Further benefit is gained when analyzing how the traffic is running through different VRFs, visualizing the entire traffic exchanged with any specific network within the NREN system or with the external internet.
